I'm constantly amazed we keep procreating like popcorn. so much for common sense. Every cell in our body screams: "reproduce! reproduce!" Society really needs to recognize, despite how much the church tries to deny it, our animal past still holds sway many times.

What does marriage have to do with procreation. There are a lot of unwed mothers out there, and there are a lot of men who have children with different women. I don't think polygamy would result in a large population increase either, economics has far more effect on birth rates than peoples marriage status. Poor animal husbandry, have you heard of Jon and Kate + 8 or 19 kids and counting... one man one woman in each marriage and each marriage producing a butt load of kids... and the parents, well not too swift from my point of view, so I'm guessing poor stock.

  • It's Time to talk about Reparations for Gays & The Mormon Church should pay for all Gay Weddings in CA   14 years 44 weeks ago

Let me start that Iam appalled when gays are harmed or killed. Father Groeschel on Catholic television said that there us a difference between gays and gay lifestyles. There are gays who enjoy the friendship of another man to help pay bills etc. The gay lifetyle acts out it fantasies sexually. We need to know the difference. Harming or killing a suspected gay person is no reason to harm or kill another person. I believe that harming and killing are worse than a gay lifesyle. God should judge another person.

I sometime hear the argument against same sex marriage be that if gay or lesbian couple raise children, then the children will become gay. Obviously, there is no evidence of this mythology. And even if it were true, so what?

However, if we were to apply this reasoning, then we would have to do away with a marriage between a man and a woman.

Think about it. Who raises most of the children in this country? Straight people do. Whether it is a nuclear family or single parents, for the most part straight people raise most of the children in this country.

Gay and lesbian people exist in this country. Therefore, if most children are raised by straight people, then most gay and lesbian people came from homes with straight parents.

Therefore, if one is going to push forward the argument that gay and lesbian parents raise gay children and this somehow invalidates marriage between gay and lesbians, then it also invalidates marriage between a man and a woman.

Afterall, straight men and women are raising the most gay and lesbian people.

    Dear Thom,

This open letter is for you. I want to be an optimist who believes that America has a future. Maybe you can be of some help in sharing ideas. Here are my concerns. Our electronic elections are rigged and we live in a total police state.

Let me also say that our government is under the total control of the oligarchy, the rich, the corporatists, the control freaks, conservative crazies, and the sociopaths.

There is no way the average Americans can take back their government.

    Sincerely, Gerald

re: #33: Maxrot ask the question about polygamy, not me. I dont really care. I just think it would be funny giving the demographers fits!

@ Harry Ashburn RE 'What exactly is wrong with polygamy, any way?":

Lack of population control and the potential shift demographics to towards the favor of recessivists.

Additionally, I am against poor animal husbandry in all stock animals . . . Including flesh and blood human beings.

Polygamy would REALLY mess up marriage demographics! :D i.e." how can a county have 45,000 married women and 18,000 married men?"

  • Daily Topics - Thursday August 5th, 2010   14 years 44 weeks ago

What exactly is wrong with polygamy any way. What's between one consensual adult and another and another and another and... is really their own business.

    @Maxrot:

Close friends of mine got married in the San Fernando Valley records office in beautiful downtown Van Nuys as they had nothing except a handful of friends to celebrate the acknowledgement of their love . . . AND yes, it was gay.

I guess I'm trying to say that I am okay with the funders of Prop HATE paying for non-heterosexual marriages in perpetuity and day.

  • From Global Warming to Goldman Sachs - It's all about the Money   14 years 44 weeks ago

Thom, OMG! my head is spinning!!!!

How does a man like that (your last guest) ever get thru life?? What is wrong w/people?

btw, do any progressive hosts ever listen to each other? I get you don't want to be like the lock-step cons but I never hear any of the liberal talk show hosts using facts from any of their peers.

When I watch Ed Schultz, he never uses any of your very intelligent facts to debate cons & you're guilty of doing the exact same thing just now w/your last guest. When he said 52% of Californians voted for prop 8, your argument should have been "You can't vote down rights, that's why they're called 'rights'", no matter how many ignoramuses vote for it.

And where did I hear this...on Stephanie Miller's show. She's the one progressive who will use other hosts talking points.

As for Jeff Sessions, that poor excuse for a human being, he must have pix on everyone! and as for his being elected by the people of his state, 2 ideas: voting machines & (I think this probably is the answer) proof our educational system is VERY broken!!

    My daily rant:

    http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2010/08/angle-reid-agenda-a-violation-of-the-first-commandment.php

Ms Angle's comment was meant to be about the First Amendment . . . Not the First Commandment. She attempted to imply that it is ‘ishy’ that a correct and proper interpretation of our Constitution is idolatry because it is an acknowledgement of the People being the source of power in our recreational democracy and not some piss-poor misinterpretation of the God of the Hebrews . . . Only she lacks the raw brain-power to grok and communicate the thought effectively.

I have two issues with Ms Angle’s broken version of reality:

    1. While the People ARE the source of power in our form of government, it is NOT bad or wrong; it is very foundation of all that is good and right and correct and lawful in our great country.
    1. Ms Angle drags God into the personal and earthly (vain) pursuit of governance. THAT is actually blasphemous . . . by DEFINITION. THAT is actually profane. THAT is actually proscribed in what Christians call, “The Ten Commandments”. THAT is actually sacrilegious. THAT is actually heretical. THAT is actually contrary to accepted belief. THAT is actually impious. THAT is actually sinful. THAT is actually disrespectful to her version of her god . . . Throw on top of that her false claims piety and virtue . . . Color her total hypocrisy as the pure expression of asshat.

I don't think its appropriate to have the Mormon church pay reparations by paying for all gay marriages for the next ten years. However, if you say they have to contribute $15,000.00 for each gay marriage, and the Catholic organization the Knight of Columbus (also big contributors to the Prop 8 campaign) also have to pay $15,000.00 for each gay marriage I think that's fair. But to say that one or both of these organizations have to pay for all of each gay wedding in the next 10 years, c'mon, $30,000.00 is over the top for most weddings, but for a gay marriage, I'm betting its just a drop in the bucket. (Got to have at least 10 ice statues, fountains of champagne, open bar, cakes made by the cake boss, etc....)

Sounds like the Bishop wishes he lived an a Theocracy. Under a Christian Theocracy, according to the New Testament, we could have slaves.

OK so does this preacher think its alright to prevent white and black people from getting married to each other? Is that not an issue of civil liberties.

A black conservative preacher? Reparations for Gays in California? Hell, a conservative black preacher would argue against reparations for the crime of slavery, let alone gays and their systematic discrimination.

It's incredible that an America that could be comfortable with people bringing loaded guns into a Starbucks or a church, could be uncomfortable with the Prop 8 Ruling. If we are indeed a country governed by laws, shouldn't they at least make sense ?

I just posted on the board in the "environment" section an article on high fructose corn syrup and cancer

  • Daily Topics - Thursday August 5th, 2010   14 years 44 weeks ago

Also would like to hear more info on partially hydrogenated oils too. One of the two ingredients I look for on labels is partially hydrogenated oil or high fructose corn syrup. I know, there are more poisonous crap inserted into our foods, but as far as I know the two I mention are the most pervasive. Apparently I must be doing something right, both my kids are a very healthy weight, and are rarely sick.
