Robert F. Kennedy pointed out that the police in the USA try to arrest a suspect without blowing up a whole block.
Can you figure out why people in the world hate us for sending them cruise missiles and Hellfire missiles to kill (extrajudicially) people who might be criminals?
The Russians built roads, schools and other infrastructure in Afghanistan, but they had to be killed and expelled because they were occupiers.
"Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), has called the idea of reading Faisal Shahzad Miranda rights a "serious mistake."
The thing about Miranda Rights is that they are there to protect the innocent who are wrongly accused, not the guilty. Fortunately McCain knows with certainty that this guy is guilty, so no further investigation or legal proceedings are needed - because we all know the only thing McCain has ever been wrong about is whether or not he is a maverick.
@newtrev, yeah lets not read an American citizen his rights, because then his lawyer will have another legit issue to hold up prosecution of his defendant. As if this guy doesn't realize he can just say nothing and stonewall. McCain has lost all touch with reason and reality, must be driving him crazy that he's probably not even going to win his own Senate seat back this year. He doesn't even realize he has the right to remain silent too!
The real crime about industrial energy corporations is that the people injured or killed are reduced to a statistical cost of business, except to their families and anybody who has a sense of empathy.
Hey, more strip clubs then churches? That gives me an idea... The Church of the Blessed Hooters. Heck Gerald, there is hope for me yet, I think I have stumbled upon the one Church I may wish to visit on a very regular basis... and give, give, give. ;-) Hallelujah, Praise and Give Thanks... to Jiggles and Monique now at the Altar.
After all what is a Cross, but a pole with a cross brace ;-)
BP could have paid $500K for a safety device and capped the oil that is spilling out.
They have lost a drilling platform, 11 men, millions of gallons of oil, and public opinion is completely against them.
They wanted to save $500K (not even a drop in the bucket of their profits) and have lost millions (more if they actually are successfully fined, though I'm not holding my breath). Priceless. :-)
DANG! I have too much going on today and this link is still frustrating me. Can someone figure out the exact link and post it here? http://www.capitol.hawaii.gov/session2010/
I can get to the page using google, but not my comcast. I want the actual resolution.
@Gene, that's true, and some people are attracted to those job because family members are part of the organization, or because close friends were joining and it seemed reasonable, or because some people think they can actually do good by serving (sorta in the vein of your last point, but more as in doing good by helping not dictating).
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a cop apologist, I'm just saying not every pig is a worthless piece of crap pretending to be God. Its just the majority.
As you said, Thom, 'don't kill and don't steal' have obviously been around since way longer than the Bible. We wouldn't have survived as humans if we hadn't adapted those a million years ago or so.
But let's think about a few others - sure, 'bear false witness' could be libel or slander, but what about covet? Since when do any laws tell us what we can think, or what the punishment should be if we even think about or fantasize about how nice it would be to have something someone else has? In capitalism, having only one of something is the free marketer's dream. Don't covet my ox? Are you kidding me, he's one of a kind, how much will you give me for him?
I'm not into mind control I am not pompous or arrogant enough to think that my definition of God is what is in everyone else's heart. Anyone that thinks they have the answer to that is truly a loon or a charlatan.
How will you legislate "honor thy mother and father?" Is a Sunday in May good enough? Can I go to jail if I forget to call or send flowers? What if dear old Dad is a psychopath who killed Mom and got the death penalty? Do I have to 'honor' both their graves?
The first commandment is of course, the most troubling. How shall we legislate, "I am the lord your God?" Who is speaking? Allah? Yahweh? Jesus incarnate? Jesus reincarnated? Actually, I'd like to see someone TRY and define the God that is speaking in that commandment, and then turn it into a law. Here! This is the God we mean! Yeah right. Way to start a war...
@Zero G., but it was the Jonas Bros. he was threatening with death from above... I can kinda' back that, he can also threaten any Oil, Health Care or Wall St. exec too.
@Gene, maybe that's the reason, but on the other hand, my buddy is Mexican so I doubt he was avoiding arresting us based on our race, but perhaps. As far as I can remember, it was already illegal to drink alcohol on our local beaches at that time (I know for sure it is now, I think I was underage too). Being that I went through private school, I knew peers that wanted to be police officers, in fact another buddy of mine was on that track. All I'm saying is I'm quite aware, that most police officers are pretty much the same as all the rest of us. Some can be incredible assholes, and let their position go to their head, others are reasonable and just want things to go smoothly. You never know which type is walking up to you, so if you're going to be mouthy, you're gambling while lowering your odds to wIn.

@Maxrot: how about "Church of the Holy Orbs"? Instead of communion wafers they use nipples.
Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), has called the idea of reading Faisal Shahzad (an American Citizen) Miranda rights a "serious mistake."
Even if the bomb had gone off as planned, Faisal Shahzad would have done less damage to New York than Goldman Sachs did...
who is the real terrorist here???

Such a deal, sadly.

BP warned of rig fault ten years ago

An irony exists: Oil extracted from US fields does not go to the US; it's sold on the open market.
BP could have paid $500K for a safety device and capped the oil that is spilling out.

Unfortunantly the Gulf Coast is the Punchline :-(

"Voluntary Regulation" is an oxymoron. Even seven-year-olds can see that.
@foodfascist: good on you. I take it from your expletive 'Dang"! that you're a Gary Larson fan?

Sorry for this post, was having problems with Comcast pulling up the justin hawaii link....hmm.. I got around it.
@Harry ""Marshall Law" :D Marshall Law was a great sheriff!"
Aha! That 'splains it! The revisionists were right, there was no "Marshall" Law, only martial law.
And deputy Law too I bet!

@Maxrot: Some jobs (many that require uniforms) attract people who believe they can control society and prevent what they think is illegal or immoral.

@Zero G. yeah, it bugs me that nobody remembers Jackson State 2 killed.
