"Certificate of Live Birth" is what they call birth certificates. I was born in a hospital in Nebraska the same week Obama was born in Hawaii. I was issued a "Certificate of Live Birth" that is nearly identical to the one Obama posted online. That is what you get in a lot of states, including Nebraska and Hawaii.
OK so if my American Mother gave birth to me outside the country while on vacation (lets just say for the sake of argument), does that actually mean I'm not an American Citizen, is the law really setup that way? I find that hard to believe.

@mstaggerlee, if a company is actually producing a patented item, I'm OK with them being allowed an extended period of ownership of the item, say up to 50 years; being that a life time expectancy of a human is somewhere around 70 years, and that an inventor would probably be about 20 years of age at least when filing a patent, just putting that as a basis for a reasonable lifetime expectancy for an individual to profit off of a patent. Not unlike the average working life of an individual. My 5 year cutoff was basically putting forth, that if a company/individual, can not show that it's trying to put the product into production (whether or not they are making a profit), then have it released into the public domain. Use it or loose it law.

@Nels/LeMoyne - I'm also on board with this - perhaps 5 years is not enough time - I suspect 20 years might be more reasonable. Or perhaps the period should be different, depending upon whether the patent rights are held by the original inventor, or by someone who bought (or obtained in some other manner) them from him.
A garage-based entrepreneur who patents an original idea may need considerable time to obtain the resources required to go into any kind of significant production. However, when an oil company obtains a patent for a solar energy device, and keeps it under wraps in order to maintain the status quo that supports their business model, we MUST not allow such a practice to endure in perpetuity.
I beleive the same should apply to copyrights. 20 years is the longest one should be able to profit on a single idea. Make what you can on it in 20 years, and if that's enough to support you for the rest of your life, congratulations. If not, then go have another idea.
This is why I hope and pray that wherever the soul of Senator Sonny Bono (who gave us the Millenium copyright act) may now reside, he's spending all of eternity skiing into that blessed tree!

Anniep, this birther conspiracy is racist now, but if a white democratic president is elected, I do not doubt that this and similar tactics would not be off limits. I'm just saying it's more than just racism, its desperate actions committed by a desperate party ideology.

Will someone ask one of these birthers...who by the way accept NO evidence to the contrary of their opinion...if they've found Obama's mother's passport when she left Hawaii to go to Kenya? I'm sure a FOIA request could get that info.
This is obviously so racist. They are saying that no one adopted, whose house was flooded and or burned, who lived in NOLA during Katrina can ever hope to be President. Of course a white candidate would be given free ride.
@gerald, if you were president, just how would you enact these desires? US Presidents are not Kings, Popes or Dicatators, they don't get to just proclaim "This is my will and my will be done".

Thom, you asked last week I think where was Haliburton in this debacle? Well, (humor intended) Schlumberger, 2nd largest oil services next to big Hal, spun off it's deep sea well operator Transocean as a separate company in 1999. Schlumberger was started by two French brothers, and of course it is incorporated in Netherland Antilles. I think Transocean is HQd in Switzerland, another country that protects corporations. It's time for the death penalty for BP and Transocean, I see the head of BP says it's not his fault today (yes, it IS!).
@rladlof Israel's genocide is not a defense of their right to exist. I personnley have a problem with their un-shared claim of Jerusalem.

If I Was President
This is an open letter on If I Was President.
Our troops would be well paid and if they are killed or maimed their loved
ones would receive full military pay of their husbands. If they had children money would set aside for financial aid to go to college or a trade school until the sons and/or daughters were 25 years old. Medical plan would the same as the Congressional medical plan or even better.
Every time Congress receives an increase in salary, the minimum wage would increase and so would the increase in soldiers’ salaries or for their loved ones if the soldier was killed or maimed in the military service.
I would have a mothers’ committee of no more than twenty mothers to give recommendations about going to war or not going to war.
*Our beautiful environment will be protected and a quality education will be available for all students, K-12 grades. Higher education and trade schools will be affordable for all students.
*Employers who hire illegal immigrants would be heavily fined, such as $250,000 per illegal immigrant. Employers would also receive a jail sentence of one year per illegal immigrant.
* I would put Christ back into the word, Christianity. I would not be afraid to say the word Jesus because it might offend someone. People who came to the White House during Christmas would be able to see the Christ child in plain view and not given an obscure setting. Our soldiers in Saudi Arabia would be permitted to show the Cross on Saudi soil.
These are some things that I would do If I Was President.
In fact, I think there should be a sort of statute of limitations imposed on all patents. One that states that if a company registers a patent and then does not put the product into "substantial" production within 5 years, the patent is turned over to public domain. Too many good ideas and patents are stored under lock in key because the company that holds the patent knows the innovation would more than likely kill their company. I say death to the retardation of innovation.

Allow me to put the $500,000 cost of the remote safety valve control in perspective....
BP PLC, Europe's second-largest oil company, said [April 2010] that first-quarter profit more than doubled from a year earlier to $6.1 billion due to higher crude prices and lower production costs and taxes.
5,000,000 / 6,100,000,000 = 8.2(10^-5), so... The cost of the sonic control valve is 82 parts per million of one quarter's profits for BP - 8 thousandths of one percent. Out of every $1000 dollars of profit the cost would be less than a dime.
At the very best a few percent of the oil will be cleaned up. Any desirable and unused solar patent that BP is sitting on (and there are many) - these patents should be seized and placed in the public domain as repayment to the entire US for this toxic spill that will pollute the entire eastern half of the Gulf Coast.
