The "Darwin" Award rewards someone for benefiting mankind by removing themselves from the gene pool through their own stupidity.
Typically, the winner must die to be eligible, but on rare occasions, simply wounding themselves in a manner that assures that they will never pro-create, can allow a living person eligible for the award.
But ordinary stupidity doesn't make you a "Darwin Award" candidate, it makes you a Republican. :)
The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors. (Source: www.usconstitution.net)
There is often much confusion about what "high crimes and misdemeanors" means. Thom, in his conversation with Floyd Brown, stated that the constitution required a criminal violation to impeach. However, this is not true. this is a phrase that the reader must take in whole and cannot, to get its correct meaning, look at as requiring a "crime" or "misdemeanor." That said, then, what does the Constitution mean when it states "high Crimes and Misdemeanors?" Essentially, these are acts, which are abuses of power and undermine the operation of government. These can be political offenses and do not necessarily have to be "crimes."

These guys are very brave when it comes to taking risks with OPM (other people's money), but I'm willing to bet that they're a whole lot more risk-averse (to use their own terminology) when their own skin is in the game.
In other words, I think our simple presence will be enough to keep these lily-livers locked in their ivory towers - no threat or demonstration of physical violence will be necessary (unless they sic the Pinkertons on us!).

Instead of the NYSE, make the march's destination Goldman Sachs HQ. Arrive at about 3 PM. Stick around, entertaining ourselves, unitl about 8 PM. This way, we hold the bastards hostage in their own offices for a little while, just like they've been holding OUR MONEY hostage all these years.
Marching in Chicago is not the answer. Marching in DC is not the answer. You want to rile up Wall Street? March, 2,000,000 strong down Broadway in New York to Wall Street and a rally in front of the New York Stock Exchange. The ONLY way you show your anger is to scare them. Two million people standing outside their giant house of cards is about the only way to start that process.

Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?\
-- Joseph N. Welch to Sen. Joseph McCarthy, Army-McCarthy hearings, June 1954.
At long last, the Republican Party of Pennstylvania has apparently no sense of decency. Some of 55 years after the vicious, Red-baiting tactics of Joseph McCarthy were repudiated by America's better angels, the state GOP is picking up the tattered banner of McCarthyism and running with it -- literally, in fact, with this banner ad (top) on a popular political Web site. In this case, it's hard to say what is more appalling -- equating the sitting president of the United States with the Soviet dictators who slaughtered their political enemies and sent others to brutal gulags, or the cause this ad is promoting: The election of a judge to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court.
The ad was was first noticed on the Pennsylvania blog Gort42 (also h/t downwithtyranny) -- it appears on the top of the website GrassrootsPA, which is the leading state-oriented conservative Web site in Pennsylvania. Last night, the image -- as captured and posted by Gort42 and now here -- and this ad was at top of the site when I first visited there around 10:30; later in the night, the same banner displayed a different message -- about bailouts, healthcare and the stimulus. It's not clear whether the image with the hammer-and-sickle "Obama" was replaced or whether it alternates with the other message.
It's not the first time that the Pennsylvania Republican Party has used extreme rhetoric about Barack Obama. Last fall, when he was the Democratic nominee -- as reported here at Attytood -- the state GOP chairman Robert Gleason issued a press release that called Obama "a terrorist's best friend." This new ad also picks up a theme that gained attention earlier this fall in Kansas City, when an anti-Obama billboard placed on I-70 had the Soviet hammer-and-sickle emblem with the message: ""How do you like your change now? Obama Nation. They are coming for you! The Taxpayer. First and Second Amendments are in jeopardy. Live free or Die."
But that billboard was placed there by a lone wingnut. This message was paid for by the established Republican Party in a large battleground state. The banner ad clicks through to a Web site called PAGOPJUDGES.com, a site that was created and paid for by the federal Republican Party of Pennsylvania.
The purpose of the site is to elect the GOP's nominee for the state Supreme Court, Joan Orie Melvin, and other Republican judicial nominee -- supposedly impartial judges who'd be elected on the backs of calling the president a Commie dictator. Pennsylvania is one of only seven states that elect Supreme Court judges -- this episode may give you an inkling why the other 43 think it's such a bad idea.
Ironically, many experts think that 2009 is shaping up as a good year for Republicans because of voter anger at Washington and over the economy. You'd think they wouldn't need to play the Commie card, then, but apparently today's GOP can't help itself. Ironically, I wrote last fall that the state GOP had hit rock-bottom with its anti-Obama rhetoric. I had no idea.
It seems to me that the republicans are projecting themselves upon the democrats. The republican party loves big government and big deficits; just look at the Reagan and Bush administrations.

Yes ... I believe those very words would apply to pretty much EVERYTHING you have to say, Mr. Brown!
I don't think I will be listening to the third hour. Day-to-day life in this country is hard (and depressing) enough. I can't listen to dark predictions...How about more progressive guests and guests of color with "food for our soul"?
In the Lytle/Davidson book “After the Fact: The Art of Historical Detection” a chapter is devoted to oral testimony and its limitations. They discuss one undertaking in the New Deal writer’s project (that put unemployed journalists to work) which sought to fill a gap in the historical record that had long been ignored: slavery from the slave’s point of view. The project eventually compiled about 9,000 testimonials from former slaves still alive in the 1930s. An examination of this oral history revealed that certain similarities in background information suggested that many of the former slaves had been interviewed more than once, by different reporters.
In one statement, a former slave spoke bitterly and sharply about her experience and her masters; the fact that she addressed the interviewer as “son,” suggested that the interviewer was also black, to whom she was less fearful of expressing her views. On the other hand, the same former slave was clearly more submissive when she was reminded that she was fortunate to receive a pension, which the latter (we may suspect) was interviewed by an apparently white reporter. The former slave, in contrast to her previous testimony, didn’t mention the beatings and families ripped apart to this second reporter, but did note that she was once given a new pair of shoes for Christmas from her master. Interestingly, this reporter was aware of the prior interview of this particular former slave, taking pains to editorialize about the objectivity of that reporter, noting (as if she knew) how kind the slave masters “really” were.
Lytle and Davidson note that we may conjecture that because the former slave was more willing to reveal things to a person of her own race that she might be afraid to say in front of a white person, this original report could be said to be more truthful. On the other hand, because she was able to remember at least one nice thing that was done for her, the historical record would be incomplete and perhaps (slightly) misleading if we simply assumed that the slave masters were completely evil incarnate; but this pales in comparison to the gap in our knowledge if we simply relied on the second testimonial, which left out information the former slave chose not to state out of fear of how her words may cause her problems (such as loss of her pension).
Thus in regard to the conversation Thom had last Thursday with an African-American writer who crashed a white supremacist party in Idaho, I must disagree with the assessment that white supremacists interviewed by a man who is not white can in fact be reliably accepted as being “truthful.” Thom’s used this assumption that this would be evidence to support his theory the separation in this country has more to do with class than race (a notion that is clearly not the prevailing factor in the white/black vs. brown dynamic), and overlooking the fact that race is a form of class distinction in this country and in many other countries because it’s morally convenient. If a Latina grovels over a white man, is it for a perceived increase in social status? If marriages between black men and white women usually end in divorce, do societal pressures based on perceived racial “class” have a hand in this? Probably so. In any case, we can be fairly certain that the white supremacists who spoke to Thom’s guest were evidently self-conscious, and took great pains to deny that their racism was based on irrational beliefs, rather basing separation entirely on “behavior”—that is, “rational discrimination.” But we can surmise that what they say to each other outside of prying ears is considerably more “truthful” in regard to their actual beliefs.
While elements of class separation may exist within racial demographic groups, there is no evidence, for example, that middle-class whites and minorities cohabitate, at least not by choice, and upper-income minorities are too few to be noticed. In a “progressive” city like Seattle, we might expect to see greater integration of neighborhoods, but that is clearly not the case; Seattle is as segregated along racial lines as any city, and class considerations are simply not part of the equation in racial integration. A simple observational experiment demonstrates this: look at who stands on what side of the street at a bus stop on the weekend in downtown Seattle. It is whites we see waiting at stops that go north, while it is minorities we see waiting at stops going south. Furthermore, in Seattle few will claim that there is a “behavior” issue that prevents integration in “Chinatown”—referred to as the International District—yet separation there is real and persistent. Other than the odd tourist, this district services Asians almost exclusively.
It was also mentioned in this conversation that the white-brown/black-brown divide was immigrant-based. Again, this simply flies in the face of anti-Latino feeling that has existed since at least the extortion of California and the Southwest from Mexico, largely at the behest of Southern fire-eaters who wanted to expand slavery westward and southward; the original “filibusterers” were Southern adventurers who sought to turn Mexico and Central America into new slave states that would offset free state expansion. Mexicans who chose not to abandon their homes and property in the newly acquired territory became U.S. citizens and retained their property rights under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo; the fact that California and the Southwest has thousands of place names that are Spanish is testimony to their long-time presence. Yet white and black commentators choose to insist that the Latino presence is wholly an “immigration” issue, and that their prejudices is entirely based on this premise. Yet the reality is that U.S.-born Latinos lived under in a Jim Crow society themselves, their property confiscated and the civil rights as U.S. citizens seldom honored; this is a historical reality that has never been adequately addressed in American history books.
Last week, I received an email from the office of Rep. Robert Wexler (D-FL) announcing that he would be leaving congress in January. Wexler has been a strong, progressive voice in Washington. I am sad to see him go. He is leaving to head a think tank devoted to Middle East peace. Of course, the move will be worth it if he is able to help that situation:
I hesitated on the title because I gave some thought to America. Are we a third world country? Are we finished as a nation? Is our destiny complete and we are no longer a viable nation? Do we only rely on our weapons of mass destruction to keep us a feared nation? Well, I have decided to return to the roots of our nation and I have concluded that we are an evil nation. We are the most evil nation that will be recorded for eternity.
We are a violent people; we are a decadent people; we are a murderous people; we are a corrupt people; we are a hateful people; we are just plain evil. That is the fascist-Nazi American psyche.
We start wars; we killed God’s children; we lust for human blood; we have death panels for foreign nations and for our people; we deny health care for Americans; we are a selfish people; we have class warfare against ninety-five percent of Americans; we have an uneducated people; and we are a certifiably crazy people.
Our teachers teach to the Standardized Tests to look good as teachers. Texas Publishing Companies are reinventing history with false information. Our students are taught through rote memory exercises and they are not taught to think through problems. Six CEOs (three American and three foreign) prefer to hire foreign educated students because they can discern, think, and be creative in solving problems. Our students need to be guided through more difficult problems for the answers.
We start wars of choice. We have generals who want more Americans to die in war. General McCrystal is a screwball who lusts for 80,000 more soldiers in Afghanistan to fight and die in a war we cannot win. The terrain makes winning this war impossible. We also start wars to try out new weaponry that has been researched in a controlled laboratory. Trying out these weapons in combat will help to determine their effectiveness in killing God’s children.
We bailout Wall Street and we screw Main Street. We rigged the financial casinos to take away our hard earned money so that big bonuses can be given to the crooks running the financial institutions and there is no one overseeing this corruption. There are no laws or regulations. Nothing ever changes in fascist-Nazi America. Even our voting machines are rigged in order to steal elections.
Our fascist-Nazi nation desires to privatize everything – our roads, prisons, Medicare, social security, national parks, and many other areas. We show little concern for global warming and climate change.
We are not part of the International Criminal Court and become part of the family of nations. We are above any law on earth whether it is man’s law or God’s law. We believe that we are a good, holy, and saintly people. We consider our nation - a Christian nation. Since we are not part of the family of nations, we have used chemical warfare against other countries and there is talk of using our nuclear weapons on Iran. We cannot be tried for our crimes against humanity.
Here is the last paragraph from the above article.
The political system is unresponsive to the American people. It is monopolized by a few powerful interest groups that control campaign contributions. Interest groups have exercised their power to monopolize the economy for the benefit of themselves, the American people be damned.
Here are the last three paragraphs from the above article.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said in his prophetic 1967 speech “Beyond Vietnam” that: “The world now demands a maturity of America that we may not be able to achieve.” We have had 42 years since then to learn and grow but we are approaching the question of Afghanistan with the same immature attitude, namely: How will this affect us? When I went to Vietnam my only question was: How will this affect me? By the time I left, I realized that my actions had life or death consequences for other people.
A mature vision should recognize that the consequences of our actions in Afghanistan fall mainly on the Afghan people. Perhaps we can also recognize that Afghans may understand their country better than we do. Isn’t it possible that if all their voices were heard, they might come up with a better path to peace than our fixation on “winning”?
It is time to replace the military solution with a moral solution.
YES, WE ARE THE MOST EVIL NATION THAT HAS EVER COME ON THE SCENE!!!!! WE ARE THE UNITED STATES OF EVIL!!!!!
It is up to us to support and to push President Obama, the Senate and House Democrats, and anyone else who listens to reason. WE elected President Obama, the Senate, and the House because WE all believed in change again. As President Obama said many times during the campaign this is not about me it is about US. FDR told activists in his own party, "I agree with you, I want to do it, now make me do it." This is the time, this is the moment and this is the place to:
“Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.”
It's interesting that you thought both mstaggerlee and I were offended by comments you made. He says he wasn't and I know I wasn't.
I really am serious about not understanding what is it about my voice that gets to some women. Maybe it more than the voice. Maybe it has something to do with my sense of humor or some other quality I have.
I've noticed that a lot of women include sense of humor in qualities they look for in a man. And I recall hearing an evolutionary biologist say that laughing is a sign of feeling relaxed and safe. So maybe that has something to do with it.
I once had a conversation with a guy who was a leader of a group of atheists from a very religious country. During the conversation, he told me that there was something relaxing about me and although he was an atheist he thought I should consider opening a church were people could come and listen to me speak so they could feel relaxed. In my mind I could see them falling asleep listening to me.
Here's another thing that occurred to me. Not everyone tastes the same tastes or smells the same smell. It has something to do with certain genes being turned on or off.
I think that might account for why a lot of children don't like vegetables. It may be that they have a gene turned on that allows them to taste something in the vegetables that tastes bad.
This is just speculation, but from an evolutionary perspective, it might be because for the majority of the history of our species children nursed until they were 4 years old or so. This provided a form of birth control because women who are nursing don't ovulate or some other mysterious thing. So a woman was able to devote four years to nurturing her child.
If children didn't like the taste of vegetables, the most plentiful and consistent source of nutrition in their environment they would continue to want the best source of nutrition available and that comes in a very attractive container. This would be a form of birth control and would allow the mother to space out her children.
Wow, what a detour!!! Returning to the main road, I can conceive of there being a difference in how different people hear, with some able to hear some sounds that others can't. So there might be something in my voice that I can't hear but that some women can or there might be something in my voice that women can't hear, that would really be annoying if they did.
Additionally, men and women might be programmed by nature to respond to different pitches in voices and respond accordingly.
I really find topics like this far more interesting than politics.
DDay - Wasn't upset w/ you at all when I posted that - I guess I was bragging a little, actually. ;) My wife & I still get out to see live music about 2-3 times a month. Little in this world we like better. I'll be 56 on St. Stephen's Day. :)
B Roll - My son was 4 weeks shy of his 20th birthday when he passed away in an accident at a waterfall - he was in his sophomore year at Union College, not in the military. The dancing bear thing is yet another Grateful Dead reference - he saw over 100 of those shows with me!
I just wanted to be sure that I hadn't put myself on your "ignore" list. I'll be looking forward to your reply - Monday'll do fine, btw. :)
Sorry about that. I do intend to reply. I normally operate in Tai Chi mode and seem to be particularly sluggish today. No problem at all, just a difference in perspectives.
I'm just dealing with the lighter communications first and want to give more serious consideration to my reply to you.
I was aware that you had lost a child. My previous impression was that your child died young (it's the teddy bear) But now your comment about understanding the pain or service families makes me wonder if you lost a child in military action. Either way, it's a painful loss.
I will write a more complete reply to your post, if not today then tomorrow.

It is sad and shameful that the history of Europeans is predominately one of expansionism and usurpation, then living in denial.
Thom,
I don't think I will be listening to the third hour.

Fascist Nazi America Is Evil

Interest groups have exercised their power to monopolize the economy for the benefit of themselves, the American people be damned.
http://www.tikkun.org/tikkundaily/2009/10/17/afghanistan-success-means-e...
“Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.”
http://en.thinkexist.com/quotes/john_wesley/.
This is our time, this is our moment, and this is our place to take back America.
Please do all YOU can on Tuesday? http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/oct20hostattend/

2 for 1 -
DDay - Wasn't upset w/ you at all when I posted that - I guess I was bragging a little, actually. ;) My wife & I still get out to see live music about 2-3 times a month.
Have a great weekend, one & all.

So true, but sometimes it seem she's up, other times down, but most of the time she's charm.
