Resistance to progressive ideas began well before independence was won from Britain. The one true progressive of that era was Thomas Paine. He called for an end to hereditary political power. He called for an end to privilege in all its forms. He called for an end to the enslavement of some people by others. He called for women to enjoy equal rights with men. In "Agrarian Justice" he embraced the most progressive reform of all: he called for the public collection of "ground rents" to pay for public goods and services and to provide a fund from which a dividend would be paid to each person upon reaching adulthood. And, as if this were not enough, he also called for the complete separation of church and state by calling for freedom from religion in addition to freedom of religion. Progressives need look no further than to Thomas Paine for inspiration and the path to the just society.

Yes, MMTers are all about aggregate demand. As I mentioned before there are plenty of non-monetarily sovereign entities (i.e., State and Local Gov'ts) that need our tax dollars because their finances are similar to personal finances. We still were not completely off of the gold standard in the 30's (FDR began the process) and 60's so the laws requiring we borrow dollars (debt) to offset the difference between revenue and spending (deficit) were still relevant. Those laws became obsolete when Nixin took us completely off the gold standard.

As of 4/1/15 the oil from North Dakota will have to be stabilized, driving a lot of the light ends out of oil. This should just about eliminate the chances of the explosion that happened in West Virginia.

However if you think that there any viable alternatives to transportation fuels like you discuss in this video, you are kidding yourself. There is nothing anywhere close to the horizon on this front.

The government control of which you speak is that control let loose on us by ronnie boy and the repuglicans. A key measure that reveals this bowing to the billionaires version of freedom is the increase in M&A activity starting in the 80's. Ronnie boy quit enforcing the Sherman Anti-trust act. They said we need to give freedom to businesses to do what they want. What they wanted was to create monopolies and buy the political process so they could make rules such that no small business could compete with them.

Heck, In Israel, and likely in other countries the post office offers banking service, but don't quote me about the other nations. You not only can have bank account, but pay your utility bills, transfer your title when you sell your car, buy a debit card, a SIM card, and if you need a cell-phone, you can get one for a decent price at low monthly payments. You can make a loan from the postal bank through their connections with one commercial banks.

Yeah, they offer a web site where you don't even have to go to the post office, go to the website, follow the directions, and bingo, it's paid in full.

Funny, too the government privatized it, and the new owners figured they had to make money or else they'd go broke. They did and they make money. You can even buy foreign currency without a commission, and debit cards in foreign currency, too. Did I forget envelopes and packaging materials, faxes, send applications for passports (local)

It's a full service post office. Right, business can send mass mailings, and they will assist them in the effort, saving them the cost of hiring out people to distribute it. So it's junk mail, but it's a way of the post office to make money.

I think the trouble in the States is that anything that has the tag of government is treated by the neo-Cons as the enemy, and in the meantime whatever infrastructure is left is falling apart so even the neo-Cons are hurtin'. It must be they have so much money, they have to "find new and more interesting ways" of spending it.

A replay of the 1950s - 60s when most cashed their checks at the grocery store, not many credit cards and no debit cards in those years . Many stores charged a small fee for this service to cover their costs but they didn't want to hit the average person too hard because they were hoping that they would take the money and buy their weekly groceries while in the store. Utility pay stations and Money Orders were also available and those services still exist today in many stores. When average workers can't even afford the banking fees to maintain a checking account much less the $40 + to order a small quantity of personal checks, the red flags should be flying !
