I actually predicted that if law enforcement could subdue people easily without killing them, that power would be abused to the point of oppression.

You are probably right, here, but how about the Tahrir Square technique!? ;-) Legality is just a technicality and subjective, anyway, after all if so many wealthy scamsters can manipulate politicians who make the laws, and the ones who enforce the laws can get away with overstepping or breaking the laws, en masse, then why should the people be so "law abiding"? They had many "laws" in Nazi Germany too that the Nuremberg Trials determined were not valid.
When the masses realize that they don't have to "take it anymore" nor constrain themselves in the narrow definition of laws that are created by corrupt elites...and work in massive numbers to rebel against the few that try to control the masses then we can create a more equitable system that benefits the many instead of just the few.
Don't fall prey to charismatic "leaders" or "organizations" that want to "take control" and "steer" because they may not only be infiltrators and subversives, but may be constrictive and corruptible..working in their own selfish self interests....and controllable by those who would destroy all that has been gained by the hard work and bravery of the rebelling masses.
Stick to the main messages that real change, and not just words and promises, must occur immediately (not 4 years or even 1 year down the road) that will benefit the many and not the few. People are dying because of the current corrupt system...and it will get much worse...very soon....for many of the rest of us.
Laws regulating, and taxing, banking and Wall Street must be created or reinstated, and most importantly...enforced.
Decent, affordable by all, health care..like a "Single Payer System" like in other countries needs to be created.
Stop the military and mercenary carnage and presence, and occupation, in other countries and stop the torture and prison camps..saving the US a lot of money.
Make the tax system more progressive...taxing the rich on the order of what it was during Eisenhower's Presidency.
Don't touch the social programs like Social Security or Medicare or Medicaid. The only lifelines that many people have between life and death.
Stop American businesses and corporations from outsourcing our jobs.
Take the money out of politics. The only people that should be losing their jobs are the lobbyists.
And that is just the tip of the requirements but should be the absolute minimum in order to return to any semblance of normalcy.
coolflowers: Good on you for protecting that kid!!! And it really is shocking that these Fascist Pigs would spray a little kid! I'm glad you found your way to the right side of the fence on that issue of becoming a cop. Some cops are good but they have to take orders from bad leaders. We need to break that terrible precedence..the top down structure is too easily corruptible.
I thought we were supposed to have corrected that problem, the "I was just following orders" excuse, at the Nuremburg Trials. But I guess it is easy to be arrogant and high and mighty after defeating an enemy. I wonder how those "judges" at the Nuremburg Trials would judge what our country has done around the world since...and how it treats it's own citizens?
But, thanks for protesting! You represent more people than anyone can imagine...people that may not be able to get out into the streets...or who are too afraid of the consequences. We need our young people, and anyone else who is willing and able, to rebel against tyranny and injustice. These people are heroes. And people like that 84 year old woman who got sprayed in the face with pepper spray is especially heroic. And so was the military guy who got cracked on the head by these vile gutless automatons with badges...who were "just following orders".
We need another "Nuremburg Trials" held in many cities across the US and hold these contemptible bully boys and their leaders..police chiefs, mayors, governors, congress persons, the President, and the crooked corporate system accountable for their actions.
Maybe we are not too far away from Tahrir Square after all. When our very survival is at stake, as it is for some people right now, and as it soon will be for many more of us, Tahrir Square may be the only thing we have left.
Or instead of changing the FOX network name to GOP, we can just start using a Fox for the Republican symbol. Though a weasel would be tempting to use too.
Breaking news, occupation camps are breaking out at shopping centers everywhere. People have spontaniously begun to camp out near doors of local shopping centers, they have brought tents and materials to stay for an extended time. Initial reports are that they are demanding goods at lower prices and surprisingly the shopkeepers are promising to meet their demands. No police presence is reported at this time and.... oh wait sorry my bad, these aren't Occupiers, they're just Black Friday shoppers. Its hard to tell the two camp types apart until you take note of the presence or lack thereof of police.
Amazing how no one is worried about the Black Friday camps public safety? Wonder why?

Here is something we can all do. We should call business and shops located in the areas where the occupations are taking place and let them know that you will not be patronizing their businesses this holliday season because you are afraid that the police will attack you. Let them know in no uncertain terms that it is not the protesters that are the problem but the police instead.
These are my thoughts as well. It may very well be a bad idea for protesters to arm themselves with pepper spray or bear spray, but as an average citizen who finds herself while shopping or taking care of business in our cities where OWS is excercising its first ammendment rights, in a situation where police are taking unneccessary brutal actions which may effect uninvolved bystanders, I plan to protect myself against them. Maybe there should be some siminars held on how average citizens can protect themselves from the hysterical and paranoid actions of those whose jobs it is to protect them. Clubs and civic organizations should offer self defense courses so that the average citizen knows what to do in case their members are the next targets of these so called public servants. I'm sure there are existing techniques implemented by peoples' movements worldwide that can be utilized by average citizens here, that are legal means of self defense but will also send a message to police depts. that the average citizen will not tolerate the brutal actions of those who are paid to protect us but in fact are acting as corporate thugs.
I suggest that if anyone is a member of any sort of organization, you should suggest that courses be offered in what to do when confronted by out of control police brigades. Remember, it is OWS today but it could be your group tomorrow.
What should occupiers do next? Well, since this is an organic, live movement, maybe the most natural thing to do is to respond to daily, immediate occurrences. Let's say, maybe we (as a nation) could voice an outcry in response to what the bogus Super-Committee has just done (nothing - big surprise). Is that supposed to kick off more cuts? You know the Republicans will try (and probably have success) in getting the defense cuts taken off the table and the Bush tax cuts still being cut. They think they will get their way - and will- unless we respond in a big way. This cannot happen.
In addition, must demand that the cuts in Medi-Medi and SS not take place. (They are not the immediate problem.) We need to focus on eliminating the Bush tax cuts and then take swift steps to correct the problem of not requiring those who make over $106,000 to pay Social Security. When did they get that tax break, and why aren't more people discussing it? If just these two actions (alone) would occur, then they would answer some major problems and help us be on our way to healing. These two things are completely related to the Super-Committee topic, and are easily understandable to the average person.

I am glad I did not make cop. I do not want to be associated with cops now. I am so ashamed at what I am seeing. I remember when I was protesting in Portland against Bush, when an officer named, "Baird" doused us with pepper spray. We were peaceful. I remember instinctively jumping to protect a little kid from the spray. The Portland, OR media lied and got away with it. Many cops are cool, but there are so many a-holes too.

One simple tactic might be to hold up ones hands to meet the pepper spray so that the stream will bounce back to the face of the spraying offender. I imagine that the cops wear goggles and masks which would, of course, help protect them but just taking it without defiance is silly. Holding up your hands to protect yourself is a natural reaction and if one did it skillfully enough the stream may hit the face of the sprayer.
We have to be very wary of anyone or organization that claims to be someone or something it is not. There are lots of organizations with names that sound inviting but are in fact not looking out for our interests and are actually working against our interests.
Information about us is not hard to come by...even our on-line resume's tell a lot about us. And some resume's seem to indicate one's level of technical competence in ones ability to navigate, and or manipulate, the internet. I just hope these people are not on the wrong side. In many ways, they appear to be friendlies. I hope that is the case. But some could be not what they appear to be and infiltrate and collect for devious and manipulative purposes. Cryptic, huh?
Are we on the eve of total economic destruction?.....I see no trade or tax reform on the horizon and much more job loss... thanks to more CUTS! However most of us know a select and evil few on Wall Street will get much wealthier as the economy continues to disintegrate.
History shows we have no alternative, Govt. must SPEND its way out of a depression. Just ask any good economist!
Are you so sure that this whatis-theplan website is really anonymous? There is quite a bit of chatter about this group on the internet and maybe people should watch this video before believing that "whatis-theplan" web site is really legitimately Anonymous. The video basically claims that the web site whatis-theplan.org is not really anonymous..but that it is just one of many web sites that claim to be anonymous and who are trying to make money and/or prey on unsuspecting people who fall for it.
This video says that this web site collects information of people who sign up and are susceptable to government seizing control of the servers and collecting of membership information. Doesn't sound like "anonymous" to me! This video says that the real anonymous is not about profit but this web site sells merchandise. It says that "Whatis-theplan.org and all it represents is fundamentally destroying Anonymous".
The video says that Anonymous is a leaderless movement yet Whatis-theplan.org moderators control how the conversations play out by banning anyone who attempts to make an independent thought or question the website moderators. The video says..."We have concluded that it is something set up by heretics or federal agencies so that Anonymous might be contained and controlled yet users can still feel like they are contributing. "You have done this because you FEAR the true idea of Anonymous. You realize you cannot stop it so instead you seek to twist it."
Think about it....Anonymous...means anonymous...it does not mean sign up, give us information about you, let us sell you a t-shirt (or whatever)...it does not mean that you will be corrected or ostracized for saying the wrong things that are not in accordance with the dictates of the dogma that the site may demand. Anonymous is not about peace-loving hippies and flower children...and lets all just get along. It is more about tearing down the corrupt and entrenched power elite systems and freedom of information.
