I agree with you 100% Thom. Just a suggestion on wording. I think a lot more people know the meaning of the word "Monarchy" than the word "Oligarch." To describe the conservatives/Republicans/ Wall Street, I've been using "Corporate Monarchy", "Monarchists", the "New American Monarchy", "Wall Street Monarchy", "Stop Monarchy/the Monarchists -- Save Our Democracy" and so on.
Everyone knows the meaning of the word "Kingdom" --- so I've been using "Kingdom ruled by Wall Street CEO's" to describe the main goal of the Republican Party. ("Monarch/ist" Party? - there's another idea).
Why am I using all these words? Because, to the independent thinkers and anyone who Hasn't been brainwashed by the Conservative Indoctrination Machine, - it's obvious that they are accurate.
Thanks, DR. One of the problems with the excise tax is that it was hidden behind wordnoise. The consumer had to seek the explanation because the phone company didn't explicitly identify the name of the tax and its purpose.
Pelosi's picks for the Joint Select Committe on Deficit Reduction: James Clyburn (SC-6), Chris Van Hollen (MD-8) and ... Xavier Becerra (CA-31)? "Becerra" should have an /s/ sound in it. (A c that's followed by an e, i or y cannot sound like a k.)
UStream's rudely interrupting with advertising that pops into the middle of the program makes me less inclined to pay for an account. They should know that this tactic serves nobody.
Thom just announced that the Taliban broke off peace talks. Since we have run Al Qaeda out of Afghanistan, does that mean that we are at war with a religion? Is this now another very expensive crusade?
You are right, that both parties are at fault. But one of the biggest fallacies is that they are equal to blame. Most national news outlets make the same mistake; portray both sides as equal sides of the pendulum. Please don’t make the same absurd assumption that Republicans and Democrats are equal to blame. Most the corporate backed policies, which we adhere to today, are Republican owned.
Imagine a Cash Cow corporation (USA), that has been driven into the ground the last 30 years by bad policies, and then a new ‘black’ CEO takes over 2 years ago, and putting half (or more) of the blame on him.
I would estimate, 10% of the population benefits mostly from Republican policies, 60 % would benefit most from Progressive policies, and 30% would benefit from Democratic policies. Yet the House has a majority of Republicans. Why? -Corporate dollars in our elections.
No one is talking about taking all of the money from the super rich. We are talking about them paying their fair share of taxes. But besides money, the super rich are very powerful simply by their immense wealth. Power tends to corrupt and it has corrupted them. Their power allows them to cast millions into poverty, to overrule the desires of millions of voters and the power to have laws made that benefit themselves at the expense of others.
Many of the rich consider their riches as proof that they are superior to others and worthy of control. They are just modern day Aristocrats.

I was phonebanking for the Wisconsin Democratic Party from Pittsburgh this past week. One thing I learned that I Do Not Hear people saying:
The 4 Republican Senators who held on to their seats have all been in office for 20 - 30 years ! Think of how Big a Lift that is to get a whole bunch of rural people to Change the Way they've been voting for 20 - 30 years --- all in just a few months. It's awfully hard to get people to do a 180-degree turn that fast.........and then on top of that, you have the tidal wave of corporate money manipulating the voters.
One question: Do you know if all or some of those Wisconsin state senators will be up for re-election again in 2012 ? Because if they are, that's one more shot........ And you have to keep faith that people might eventually wake up as the damage caused by our new Corporate Monarchy keeps piling up.
Is there still an excise tax on telephone bills that was implemented to pay for the Spanish-American War?
People refused to pay this war tax in the 1970s. I was one of those people. One argument was that the phone company was not empowered to collect this tax and act as an agent of the government.
Completely reality-free post from David Cyr here. According to the Associated Press, Barack Obama took in $60 million from Wall Street in 2008, John McCain $52 million. That's a very insignificant difference: 54% - 46%. And that's Ancient History now, with the January 2010 Supreme Court decision in favor of the cleverly-named Wall Street Lobbying group called Citizens United. In the 2010 elections, Republicans, Wall Street, and conservative groups combined spent $4 Billion dollars to defeat congressional Democrats. Unions and Democratic groups raised 10% of that amount -- about $400 million.
As to your other points, Wall Street took complete control of Washington D.C. during the George W. Bush administration. The Big Banksters basically put a gun to the head of the American Economy and extorted the March 2009 2nd round of Bail-Outs from the Obama administration. Senate Republicans protected and secured Wall Street's power as soon as President Obama took office by using the Filibuster to Block the Democrats from using their majority on 93% of all votes. ..........But I'm sure it makes you feel real smart to condemn both parties as being exactly the same
if you're listening on UStream - they have ads that jump in unless you are willing to pay for a subscription to UStream. There isn't anything we can do about that as they have bills to pay too.
Not only did "Impeach Obama" start before he was sworn in, I saw an "Impeach Clinton" sign in a college dorm window before he was sworn in. It's reflectiv eof the fact that Republicans care nothing for rules of the game; they just want what they want, by any means.

If the people had to pay a war tax, on a pay as you go basis, then we would have very, very few wars.

Americans believe all kinds of things. I've never trusted common knowledge.
Corporations are sitting on Billions in unspent cash.
So let's give them a tax break to give them an incentive to hire...
somehow...it doesn't seem like that would work....
Still getting loud, short commercials right in the middle of Thom's live show! Disgusting to have to put up with these RUDE interruptions!
Commercials are stomping on Thom's conversations. Aggravating to listen to an interaction between Thom and guests when this happens.
