Desperation is what happens when you've got nothing to lose. In terms of public opinion, a lot of the attachment to the status quo comes in the form of what's called 'buy-in.' This can take the form of having made some progress in the career game, owning some property, etc. This is part of the reason radicalism is usually seen as one of the so-called privileges of youth. We will probably not get a demographic youthquake the magnitude of the so-called 'baby boom generation,' but loss of buy-in is affecting all age groups right now. Society is going through a shake-down, and people of all ages are finding themselves back to square one in 'getting established,' whether it's establishing a career, a portfolio or a reputation. This is the kind of environment in which anything can happen.
Choosing to spend on 'made in China' is supporting forced ABORTION and COMMUNISM! Unlike the usual anti-abortion rhetoric that a tax dollar might sit next to a pot that covers Womens' Healthcare - and an abortion if needed - most Pro-Lifers are actively supporting ABORTION daily with their choice of spending! While not ALL items made in China carry the label, there is a good chance that none of these people are thinking about how they spend their money when given a choice. While the USA has a policy of not covering abortions but allows people to make their own choice, the anti-abortion (sometimes mis-labeled pro-life) activists have no problem spending their money on Chinese goods where there is no choice, where abortions forced on women under the communism rule.
After all, democracy is so overrated according to their support for 'my way or no way' - dictatorship!
I am so sorry they prefer to sell the USA to Chinese and corporate rule.
Despair is often the beginning of substantial change. Despair of the Great Depression was turned into anger. When FDR was told he had about a year before an armed revolt...substantial change happened rather quickly....led and supported by many of the elites who had previously been against it.
One result of that change was the largest and, most prosperous middle class the world had ever seen..It arose out of dispair....turned into anger... and an unshakeable demand for change..
Greg Palast points out that the purge lists used in Tennesee and Florida tagged "felons" who had not yet been convicted of any crime - their conviction dates were 7 years in the future.
Wha-a-a-a-t?? Someone has been convicted or they have not. Someonw who has not (yet?) been convicted is innocent.
Keep looking forward to Fridays. If you just disregard all that spirituality mumbo-jumbo you can get on with moving forward. I wonder if Gerald has and kids. Optimism or pessimism: it's a choice. Optimism is empowering and activating. Pessimism is paralyzing and poisoning. Choosing optimism is healthy and productive.
There are not too many states that bar ex-felons from voting. Greg Palast points out that the purge lists used in Tennesee and Florida tagged "felons" who had not yet been convicted of any crime - their conviction dates were 7 years in the future. As many as 92,000 were purged in Florida.
One election commoissioner refused to purge "felons" when she found her own name in the list.
Perhaps Darth Vadar needs more cash for his Death Star project. Those planet destroying space stations aren't cheap, and are far more efficient then oil well spews.

The IL State Police have run some "safety" checkpoints on the I-88 exit to Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb. During these checks, the traffic is backed up on I-88 into a 65 MPH zone. Very safe.
A friend, who works for Northern Illinois University pointed out that the police run these checks when there may be a large proportion of Blacks using the exit. She also pointed out that a Brooks & Dunn concert at NIU will not get a safety checkpoint, but a Ludicris concert warrants the extra scrutiny.
Had to share this because it's too funny. Fred Phelps people decided to protest Comic-con and they responded with their own counter protest. The photos and signs are fricken' funny. Best one is "Superman Died for Our Sins."
Think the listeners would get a kick out of it today.
I just glanced over your rant Gerald. When Joe Kennedy proclaimed that NAZI Germany would win the war, and that all hope was lost at the beginning of WWII, he was not only wrong, he soon realized that he would never realize his dream of becoming PResident. Why, because the American people would never elect a defeatist, they have no time for such shenanigans.
You're being a defeatist Gerald, and the progressive nature of this blog has no time for such shenanigans. Snap out of it, practicing such lines of thinking does only one thing, it makes your fears come true. Your giving up before the fight has even begun, not only that your extolling others to do the same with your good intentions of telling them your anticipation of the future. You call it the United States of Hell, well the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
@Jeanie, keep in mind, you're not obligated to read every post, well at least I don't feel obligated.
Heck, I feel guilty anytime I write a post longer than a paragraph or two. Makes me feel like I'm ranting. But that's just me, don't read too much into this everybody, do what you feel is right, don't censor yourself unduly.
During WWI, troops were admonished to "turn the guns around." Many tried; there were whole companies of French soldiers that mutinied. It didn't make much difference to soldiers to die by "friendly" or "enemy" bullets.
The same happened in Viet Nam, where whole companies of soldiers refused to be sent into battle. Many of those were draftees snatched from poor neighborhoods to fight for corporations against people who had no quarrel with the poor. Muhammad Ali, in a George Carlin routine, said, "Ill beat people up, but I won't kill them." The US said, "if you won't kill them, then we won't let you beat them up." Ali also said, "no Viet Cong ever called me a nigger."
Howard Zinn wrote of labor strikes during which company thugs and US soldiers tried to break the strikes. The deaths of strikers and soldiers wore heavily on the soldiers. Thugs seem to be immune to empathy.
I love hearing from people. For one person I am deressing them and for another person I am an optimist. rladlof's comment is a winner. Yes, feeling optimistic is great for me.
@Jeanie, I do not wish to depress anyone. I try to give information. Some information is very depressing. I worked with a nurse who said to me that we should do the greatest good for the greatest number of people. This effort should be ingrained in each American.

Eliminate the very questionable, indeed spurious, need for the gas, oil and coal industries, their costly pollution, climate-change, war, and war-spawned illegal drug profits, private for-profit prisons, slavery and a host of other world-threatening malignancies - precipitated by the gas, oil, and coal industries - in yet another way. Why not create a whole new industry with the US as the home of and top producer of the best magnet motor? My bet is that Henry Ford and Harry Ferguson would love it. It works, and with considerably less risk to workers’ and citizens’ lives. With all of this really clean and safer, available alternative energy, so can the United States of America again work. Check out the following magnet motor URLs, especially you entrepreneurial minds:
For believers and skeptics alike the following URL shows a demonstration at Delft University of Maummer Yildiz’s version of the Magnet Motor. “They said it couldn’t be done” is a well-known phrase that references the competitive sentiments often issued by powers that be against inventions that threaten their status and also references a kind of gloating that inventors such as Marconi, Bell, Ford and the rest might have relished after all of their miracle projects came both to fruition as working models and to employment. It may take believers, investors, and resistance to buyouts before we see these magnet motors on the market. Perhaps Thom or some of his accomplished investigative reporters could do an in depth investigation and study and then a document or segment on Mr. Yildiz’s Magnet Machine and those of others. You know, really dissect the machine. Put a load on it. Watch it for an extended period. Gage it as it generates electricity.

Get it? Instead of a Jack in the Box..... sorry.
polycarp2, you're confusing despair with desperation.
Despair is equivalent to giving up.
Desperation is equivalent to trying to correct a problem with minimal resources.

As I've said, we already have public financing of campaigns. We just don't have any control of the funds.
