And you can tell Herb Kohl (Democrat) and Tom barrett (Democrat) that they don't need to pay for new basketball stadiums either!

Sports franchises and Sports teams are revenue generators. Any studies stating otherwise are slanted and deceiving.

All you need to do is see how many people are at any sports event from out of town. They're in our city spending money. It is ridiculous to believe that same money would have been spent in the area without the stadiums or teams to support it. Every time I go to a game, I meet people who follow the opposing team who flew in specifically to attend the game(s). I also have friends who take annual 'baseball trips' to visit other stadiums. They would not have visited those cities without sports.

So besides the people who work at the games, there's the resturant owners, their employees, hotels, car rental agencies and shops that all benefit from sports. This isn't counting the hundreds of workers employed building these stadiums or staffing them. The area around Seattle's stadiums were full of old warehouses and art studios. We've manage to maintain the studios in the new, vibrant neighborhood that has emarged around the stadiums.

Finally, I am insulted at the idea that liberals and progressives can't be sports fans too. I am passionate about my favorite teams and I'm passionate about better government, too. They are not mutually exclusive. When we were discussing building a new stadium for the Seattle Mariners, a group named 'Citizens for More Important Things' made a big splash about the public money that would be spent on the project. Funny thing - those 'Citizens' never raised extra money for those more important things. Conversely, each year, sports fans donate hundreds of thousands of dollars for local charities that were started by one of the local Sports stations and from athletes' charities. This money would not have been donated without the local teams and indirectly the stadiums they play in.

From Cracking the Code:
"In Cracking the Code, Thom Hartmann, America’s most popular, informed, and articulate progressive talk show host and political analyst, tells us what makes humans vulnerable to unscrupulous propagandists and what we can do about it. It is essential reading for all Americans who are fed up with right-wing extremists manipulating our minds and politics to promote agendas contrary to our core values and interests."
David C. Korten, author of The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community and When Corporations Rule the World and board chair of YES! magazine
From Screwed:
"If we are going to live in a Democracy, we need to have a healthy middle class. Thom Hartmann shows us how the ‘cons’ have wronged this country, and tells us what needs to be done to reclaim what it is to be American."
Eric Utne, Founder, Utne magazine
From Screwed:
"Hartmann speaks with the straight talking clarity and brilliance of a modern day Tom Paine as he exposes the intentional and systematic destruction of America’s middle class by an alliance of political con artists and outlines a program to restore it. This is Hartmann at his best. Essential reading for those interested in restoring the institution that made America the envy of the world."
