Guns don't kill people, Turbans kill people! Maybe they should ban turbans? Wear a turban and you might get killed by a deranged US-military-trained-to-hate-and-kill white supremacist.
Of course, this is said as satire or irony. But it makes just about as much sense as banning guns. Is it really a case of a white supremacist, hayseed thumper confusing Sikhs as Muslims? White Supremacists seem to hate just about everyone with an IQ way above theirs who don't fit in with their myopic, narrow-minded, and often superstitious and ignorant beliefs.
Maybe we need to ban superstitious beliefs as they tend to make people do stupid, idiotic things. But, of course, the military tends to want this kind of warped-out, psycho killer and even brain-washes them with Christian Supremacy so that they can kill Muslims for Jesus. Anyone who is not a Christian is to be condemned to hell...right..and they even inscribe biblical sayings on the rifle barrels they use in the Middle East?
Does anyone really believe that this guy would not have been able to get hold of guns if they were banned...keeping every citizen from being able to defend themselves? That is just plain stupid. If you ban guns then you won't keep them out of the hands of people that really want them..that will walk into a theater thinking he is "The Joker" or some military-trained idiot thinking he is making America safer for White man's Christianity. Where was it I read that Jesus was really a black man....oh, well, no respectable white man will believe that...they all grew up seeing white man Jesus' picture hanging on walls.
Bill Moyers interviewed on July 29, 2012 on his PBS program “Moyers & Company” the Viet Nam veteran Karl Marlantes on his book “What It’s Like to Go To War”, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran, Rhodes Scholar, author, and PTSD survivor(Post-traumatic stress disorder). Karl Marlantes’ argument revolved around the insane commitment to war where we deploy the same soldier to many tours of duty to a same war zone. One deployment, which the author experienced in Viet Nam, was too much for a person to experience, since the natural function of our brain does not comprehend killing other persons. Multiply the re-deployment experience many times to understand.
To answer your question “What can be done to prevent such murders?” we have to rethink our commitment to solving world problems with War! Maybe we can connect the dots…
Elect progressive Democrats (or Republicans if there are any) and get people like John Boehner and Michelle Bachmann out of office. They belong on the sidelines not filling leadership roles in Congress. Help progressives get in office in State Houses and Congress and these terrible killers will not hear the inflammatory speeches of these cowardly Republicans.
I still don't know why the NRA has such a lock on congress and our elected representativeThe AARP has 68 million mbmers. The United Methodist Church has nearly 8 million members. AARP has about 36 million members. So why does the NRA wield so much power over OUR representatives. Over 63% of people want to ban assault weapons and a majority of people want background checks.
i think we gotta look deepdeepinside us as a country- is the easy availability of guns especially those who get enjoyment out of an instrument of violence- is it worth the destruction of increasing number of lives in this country??- i know u 1st amendment righters r gonna beat on me thats ok- u wanna hold onto yur guns thats ok too it just defines who u r to me someone who gets enjoyment from an instument of violence- its not my thing
yup! gotta pay for a hunting license to go shoot a duck? should have to pay a yearly fee to have the gun to shoot the duck with? i like it!! now how do we sell to the gun lobby?
Guns should have an annual license costing a non-trivial amount of money like $50. That money should be used to enforce the licensing procedure. You have to produce the gun when you renew the license and you have to do it in person. If you lose the gun, you get a big fat fine and cannot buy another for 3-4 years. We should have severe penalties for unlicensed guns like felonies. Gun sales are done by title just like cars. But guns require a background check. The title can only be transferred with a fee and background check. Let's get serious about gun regulations. The guns are dangerous and need to be under tight control. Other regs could be couse requirements and testing. THese things are more dangerous than motor vehicles and should be under tighter regulation. If you buy a gun, you have to be responsible for that gun and you need to watch it closely.
Grew up around Sikhs in India and know first hand what an amazing vitality and spirit of hardwork, honest living, and agricultural farming community this is. They are a small community in India but have made their home state of Punjab the wealthiest by their incredible ability to work together peacefully and painstakingly as they grow grains and food for a majority of India. Their philosophy of "SEVA" or helping the poor, homeless, downtrodden and anyone who walks through their temple doors, is unique to them and they feed everyone irrespective of caste or faith. Protection of women and children is forefront of this very modern religious community that shunned casteism characteristic of the Hindus. Getting a little nervous there, a(rs)e alien? By the way, keep voting for fake "liberals"....and stay inside where it is nice and cozy and warm. "They" have got you right where "they" want you. And major shifts in policy has never occurred in our history without making the "wolves" or "pigs" nervous about the masses of irate citizens willing to go beyond playing their stupid, rigged games at the voting booths. cluck, cluck, cluck...understand, Kemosabe?
Funny how some people think they are being patriotic by falling for waving the flag, parades, wasting their time at the rigged electronic voting machines (perhaps voting for a fake liberal for President who will feed you false hope and then sell you out anyway), and praising the fortitude of our founding fathers who fought tyranny and taxation without representation (real representation) yet they now are willing to bend over for the current day ruling elite....saying "Oh, 'they' are just too powerful"..."we wouldn't stand a chance".
Maybe, more than a few people, who have been suckered into "serving their country" for oil companies, banksters, and the MIC...or even more important...those who might yet be suckered into risking their lives, or a horrible life no more worth living as a suffering, dying, invalid contemplating suicide....will draw the line at murdering their own people....to serve the interests of the ruling elite.
One thing the military...and even the VA seems to be very sensitive to is the very negative stigma of soldiers or veterans committing suicide. It sure doesn't help with recruiting and is a thorn in the side of politicians. They don't seem to mind if you are suffering from excruciating pain as long as they can convince you to endure it till you die. And I believe that they are hoping that you do die soon before it dawns on someone.. that in order to get the necessary tests...like CT scans, or MRI scans, or even just an Xray...to reveal the early signs of cancer...you have to say you are thinking about committing suicide.
With cancer, the earlier you detect it and treat it the better the chance you have of living a little while longer...or even cured in some cases. But the VA doctors seem to try to keep some people from getting those necessary tests. They use all kinds of diversionary and delaying actions...like pills that don't really stop the pain, or stupid "pain management" programs, or a physical therapist....anything but scanning for cancer. In order for the veteran to get these scans in a VA hospital...you have to say that you are depressed, stopped eating, and are suicidal. Oh, and very important...take the vet to the hospital emergency room...even though your doctor couldn't be contacted..and even though he may yell at you the next day for having done so....then do it again...and again until they run the scans.
Once you get the tests and it shows massive cancer (that should have been detected by the VA doctors a long time ago) then once you get admitted, the VA seems to work fairly well in giving you attention and drugs that do work...narcotics...to alleviate the pain. And they have places for the terminally ill. But, we'll see how it goes...I hope they don't try to skimp on the meds...and keep him from any more pain..till he eventually dies. But, I'm sure others in a similar situation have their own scare stories.
I can't tell you how rough it has been, as a relative, watching a someone suffer so...being told by the VA doctor that he has sciatica and that he has to learn to deal and cope with the pain....instinctively knowing that that diagnosis just cannot be right...he has something more severe...and then feeling guilty that I didn't raise all kinds of hell with these people much earlier (not that it would have done much good) to get him the hospitalization and tests and medicine he needs.
I have read other stories about veterans with practically the exact same thing we have experienced...the primary care VA doctors misdiagnosing and/or avoiding prescribing the necessary early detection tests with the various scans...CT..MRI..etc. Some are suing the VA for millions of dollars...but, unless you have specialized lawyers with lots of experience in suing the US Government..good luck with that!
If any of you are thinking about joining the military, or have relatives thinking about joining or already in...you had better think real hard about the consequences. You are fed a bunch of patriotic bull-sh!t and lies to make some few people rich and powerful. The real enemy is the one trying to recruit you to fight their stupid illegal and immoral wars. You'll likely murder many civilians, have ptsd and a guilty conscience, or get maimed or killed....or, perhaps, as is happening a lot...commit suicide.
If you aren't killed or maimed right away, you may be exposed to cancer-causing chemicals (eg: Agent Orange) or radiation (eg: depleted Uranium) that will take years to develop symptoms of cancer (that the VA doctors will ignore until it is too late to do anything about it). And then they may eventually expect you to turn on your own people...you fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters demonstrating in the streets against the tyranny that has beguiled us all with their rigged system of "democracy".
Thanks, SaltoftheEarth...and I sure agree with all your other points as well. Good recommendation on that book you mention in your next post. I'll check it out.

Is the Non-Profit World Teeming With Fraud?
Stephen J. Dubner
03/31/2008
"According to a Times report by Stephanie Strom, fraud and embezzlement in the non-profit sector account for a loss of $40 billion a year, or roughly 13 percent of philanthropic giving."
" ..an estimated $40-50 billion per year is lost to fraud in non-profits and scandal is found in nearly 20% of philanthropic organizations, according to the New York Times."
"Nonprofit organizations and faith-based houses of worship make the headlines almost weekly about theft of funds, embezzlement, corruption, fraud, health/safety violations and misconduct."
One of many ways non-profits commit fraud, at this web site, I show here because it was mentioned: " I've worked for non-profits that hired then fired employees within short periods of time..."
..."Payroll and employee expense reporting schemes
• Ghost employees – whereby either terminated employees are left on the payroll system, or fake employees are set up in payroll. Payroll checks are issued for nonexistent employees and the checks are cashed by the perpetrator."
mblady...Thank you for providing some insight into this matter. We need more people who have worked and experienced the so-called "non-profit" organizations. Just like there are greedy people leaching off of medicare (and I'm not talking about the people ON medicare..I'm talking about the so-called providers who screw us all..the doctors and assistants who bill the government for goods and services not actually rendered or charging way more than they should), there are greedy maggots who create so-called "non-profit" organizations who have every intention of "pretending to do good" but are really doing it to make lots of money. I'm sure that not all "non-profits" are like that...at least I hope not. There are schemers and dreamers and they will do anything they can for a buck...lots of bucks.
This is something few people will talk about--corruption in "social welfare" or non-profit organizations.
Sorry, but most "non-profits" are corrupt and operate like Walmart. I've worked for non-profits that hired then fired employees within short periods of time, in order to prevent having to provide the benefits they claimed publicly to provide their employees, put their employees in unsafe circumstances, but more important, only provided good public services to make their organization look good (and gather more funding).
In other words, most "non-profits" are in the business of making money. They contribute a small amount of to a community and then it seems that anything else they do--no matter how wrong--is excused once they've done some good.
Yet this is logic many Americans are comfortable with. A wealthy elite contributes by donating money to a non-profit (as long as that organization isn't creating any real social change) then publicizes it. "See? I'm rich but I give back to your community!" So all the things the elite do to harm our society, paying employees substandard wages, not providing benefits to employees and their families, overworking their employees, etc., don't matter. A CEO may cause thousands of people to become homeless by shutting down some offices and plants and laying off employees but then he turns around and donates money to a homeless shelter and people say, "He's not a bad guy. He's contributing to our society."
If a man beat his wife then donated money to a battered women's shelter, would that make it all okay? If a serial killer murdered 30 people then donated money to a crime victim support group does that negate his actions as a murderer?
Apparently so.
Yes, we need homeless shelters and food shelves, and there may be some people who are helped in a small way by those organizations. However, many people are turned away and not given the help they need. Many food shelves/shelters serve the poor stale or processed and unhealthy food. Is that a good thing? Yes, it's nice if a homeless person can crash at a shelter during a storm for a night but if the next night he is turned away he is still homeless. And homeless shelters, food shelves, etc., get more funding when they turn people away. It increases their numbers. They can say, "We helped 1000 people last year," because every night allow new homeless people to stay and kick out their previous tenants. The food shelf limits its participants to once per month. Why? Because that increases the chances of new people getting food from the food shelf and, therefore, increases their numbers.
Okay, maybe I'll write a blog on this here to explain further what I mean.
Thom wrote: "Simply put - the wealthier men among the delegates were betraying the interests of their own economic class - and they didn't want others in their class to know about it."
I know Thom needs to believe this but Madison was intent on including upper class interests into the government. He said:
The man who is possessed of wealth, who lolls on his sofa or rolls in his carriage, cannot judge the wants or feelings of the day-laborer. The government we mean to erect is intended to last for ages. The landed interest, at present, is prevalent; but in process of time, when we approximate to the states and kingdoms of Europe, — when the number of landholders shall be comparatively small, through the various means of trade and manufactures, will not the landed interest be overbalanced in future elections, and unless wisely provided against, what will become of your government? In England, at this day, if elections were open to all classes of people, the property of landed proprietors would be insecure. An agrarian law would soon take place. If these observations be just, our government ought to secure the permanent interests of the country against innovation. Landholders ought to have a share in the government, to support these invaluable interests, and to balance and check the other. They ought to be so constituted as to protect the minority of the opulent against the majority. The senate, therefore, ought to be this body; and to answer these purposes, they ought to have permanency and stability.
If Obama had been the man we voted into office, he would have taken on the big banks first. He did not, so none of the real problems are fixed. Health care did not cause the crash of 2008. The investment banks did. They are operating the same way they did before he took office, and we are heading for another crash. I am reading Keen's Debunking Economics, as recommended by Hartmann. I think Iceland followed his theories, and the country is coming back from the brink. We should have let GM go through bankruptcy along with the banks. It would have been painful, but less painful than it will be when our economy collapses. Unfortunately, neither McCain or Obama were up to the task of becoming President in 2009, and Obama never grew into the job. He may be brilliant, but he's a major disappointment.
Love your posts, Palindromedary. It does not really matter who gets elected. The President could, if he chose, not accept PAC money and just be the President. He is not "forced" to fundraise. Right now, all he seems to do is campaign. I think more people would vote for him if he just did the job we expect him to do. With all the fundraising, he looks just like the guy he is running against. It also brings out that mean destructive side of his personality which is not particularly appealing.
One arrow in the quiver might be the churches. The USPS has standards against pornography, Fedex and UPS do not. The churches ought to be informed that with the privatization their republican friends want comes pornography. Pornography is republican's best friend, note who just endorsed romney. Ask your church leaders if they are happy with pornography coming to teenagers. The USPS does not deliver abortion pills either, Fedex and UPS do.
Tinton is right about the inspections. Most of the financial services won't use USPS because when they mail fraudulent documents through the mail, it's a felony, not so with Fedex and UPS. Bernie Madoff had a few felony convictions if I'm not mistaken. Issa, the oversight committee chair is behind the postal purge. Talk about a fox guarding the hen house. He's setting up for the biggest robbery in history.

Is the Non-Profit World Teeming With Fraud?
Stephen J. Dubner
03/31/2008
"According to a Times report by Stephanie Strom, fraud and embezzlement in the non-profit sector account for a loss of $40 billion a year, or roughly 13 percent of philanthropic giving."
http://www.freakonomics.com/2008/03/31/is-the-non-profit-world-teeming-w...
