Thom, all I want to hear out of our presidents mouth is what the hell he's doing to stop this oil spill. That is the only thing that matters at this point in time - all other business should be put on the back burner until the oil stops. The BP execs should be thrown in jail until they answer our questions and stay there if we don't like their answers. I don't give a damn about the small business initiative right now, maybe after every drop of this toxic mess is cleaned up. Where is the friggin outrage? I'm so mad I can't even see straight.
Why doesn't offshore drilling have built in fail-safes?
Most major industrial systems are designed to automatically shut down if anything seriously goes wrong - for instance nuclear power stations. Why not offshore wells? I'm not even talking about a remotely triggered blowout preventer like the Dipsh*t Horizon didn't have, but something that shuts down if, for example, it stops receiving an all-clear signal.
I take it back. Not being too terribly knowledgeable about subs. I thought they could handle well over that depth. After a bit of research, I see it clearly won't work. http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ship/deep.htm Is there anything else we could park on the spill that displaces 100x what has already been tried?
In spite of the evidence you present I maintain that Corporations do, indeed, produce FABULOUS wealth. They just don't share it with you and me, or with Nigerians, Bolivians, coal miners, etc. Just cuz they don't show YOU the money, don't go thinkin' that they don't HAVE it!
re: Ohio Class Submarine, quick check on the web, test depth is 800 ft, assuming that this is just a shallow publication given by the Navy to keep its real depth potential secret, you still have over 4,200 ft to go to get to the source of the oil plume. Maybe they can just drag the hulk of the Deepwater Horizon over the well to block it, though I doubt dropping a mass of weight is really going to deform pipes that are cable of withstanding the immense underwater pressures that they are designed to work at.
I remember, during the previous administration, when they went after The United Church of Christ, questioning it's tax status. I wonder if the Obama administration will recommend going after Mr. Knight's church's tax status? Na, not a chance!
One of our founding principles is no taxation without representation. I don't want the churches to have political representation. Besides, nonprofits in general are tax exempt.
@n8chz - You think that the fact that they don't pay taxes SEPARATES churches from the state? Funny, but it seems to me that the fact that the Churches go untaxed makes them far closer to the state.
Way to many people willingly drank the Kool Aid when it came to Obama. He is and all ways has been nothing more than you typical slick, slimy palpitation. He was never a Washington outsider he had clear plans for the White house and set about getting there when he first started in public office. His campaign eluded to change with out ever being clear about what it was or real specific on how they would accomplish change. The fact he is perhaps the best orator of his generation, allowed him to generate this false hope, then people filled in the blanks in there own minds. He is not a strong enough leader to actually stand up and deal with this issue. Why? MONEY.
My hope would be that groups like PD American come up with a viable actual progressive candidate that gets in early and at least forces him to face up to his deceptions during the primary. Obma will get the nomination in 12 because of the political debts people will owe him and his war chest, but maybe just maybe someone who is actually a progressive can get the conversation going during the debates.
Park a submarine on the spill NOW! Maybe I am looney but I would think that the mighty US Navy could park a nuclear submarine on top of the spill for the next 90 days crushing the pipe and blocking most of the oil until the second tap is drilled. Look, an Ohio class submarine is at least 16,000 tons of displacement. The dome BP tried was 100 tons. The sub is 2 orders of magnitude heavier. It would at least staunch the flow for now. BP is trying to construct a solution. The well needs top be destroyed. Or maybe I am looney. Just a thought.
I recommend a visit every once and a while to http://www.progressivepunch.org/ to find out your Senators and Representative are doing . . . And where that stand.
The two party system is my one and only reason for voting Democratic. Needless to say, I'm waiting with baited breath to see what becomes of Britain's coalition government, ESPECIALLY concerning the promises of electile reform.

We love Kevin Costner http://www.kevincostner.com/
Stealth wealth, and stealth depth. Information is power. Asymmetric transparency is asymmetric.

re:#61: in that case, lets be sure Cheney and the BP bosses are on board....

Every tax exemption is truly an additional tax burden for those who can't get exemptions.
Looks bad for the Ohio Class sub as a solution. Test depth is 800 ft. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ohio_class_submarine
The Thresher was crushed and lost in an accident.

What the heck is an Ohio class submarine? Are there some cruising around in Lake Erie?
No, better to not tax the church so as to better keep it separated from the state.
@Stop The Spill: would an Ohio Class submarine be able to operate at that depth? Or would we just be adding a nuclear fiasco to the oil spill?
I agree. Non-profit organizations are socialists. Religions and religious organizations are socialists. These groups should be taxed.
@StopTheSpill, can an Ohio class submarine withstand the pressure at a mile deep?

@rladlof re: "BUT I remember being shouted down on this site for noting that Obama’s pantsuit has more green stains on its knees than HRC’s did."
ROTFLMAO, that imagery just brings up way to many innuendos.
