My radio went dead. Anyone else experience this or is it just WDTW and their usual audio engineering problems?

I LIKE this idea!!! (And one of these days I'll learn to check if there's one daily blog... ;)

WAS going to try to call in-considering I'm ON Disability!!

Oh-that's less than $700/month. On Food Stamps, (100/mo) & Medicaid, but not Section 8.
WHY do I, someone who made over $500K with her ex just 11 ago get only $694/mo? Because after my spinal injury I refused to give up hope, knew absolutely NOTHING about Social Security, finally had to give in because of medical expenses-no one would cover me & my condition was going downhill, but waited over 5 years after the accident to apply-working Part-Time, but that wasn't enough to qualify for SSD. Others REALLY should know how this works!! I know I wish I had.

Oh, as an aside-I'm more content & peaceful NOW, than I was with 2 homes, 2 cars, (my ex is blind), and a once healthy bank account. My apartment is a mess, but, hey, I'm the only one who has to look at it...most of the time anyways. :)
Although, I WOULDN'T mind moving closer to friends &/or family sometime soon.

    elaine

In America today it is becoming harder to achieve the "American Dream" that existed in the 50's. In simple terms the work environment in the 50's resembled more or less a globe; a south pole or poor class and a north pole or upper class. But today with Corporate consolidations and Big Box stores the employment environment now resembles a upside down cone; which by nature restricts the amount of workers who can move up in America today. I don't believe a so called Christian country is based on a model of the day's of Kingdoms and serfs; or maybe just in Christian America thats the plan. In this country where workers work more hours per week, work to a older age before retiring, fewer days vacation and are not 100% covered by a health plan like all of our industrialized global competitors, explain to me how where better off?

Tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 are set to expire at the end of the year, and lawmakers are battling over whether to extend any or all of them before November's congressional elections. Using a new interactive graphic from The Post, see how the Democratic and Republican plans would affect your tax rate.

I think there is an underlying desire in all to be uberwealthy, however, most of that desire there because we don't want to worry about money... after-all money is unnatural. Think about it, if you were uberwealthy, you would no longer need to worry about money... or so one would believe, but what wealthy person doesn't obsess about money, one that is on the way to a poor house. Money drives us crazy, we use it as a substitute for our real worth, to most is the only measurement that matters. In truth that is the real problem, few really care about having money, what we want is to be free from worry, to be healthy, fed, clothed and sheltered, those are natural needs, but in a civilized world we lose sight of our natural needs, and translate it as our wealth needs.

Being middle class in our country (USA) is like being uberwealthy in another, btw.

    @Gerald:

Not one of those nations (United States of America, Great Britain or Israel) has any interest in generating evil, creating chaos or fostering fear. There are authoritarian elements in all three of those countries that have those interests and act on those baser intentions BUT it would require gymnastics of insanity to label entire countries for the heinous acts of a few. In short:

While all white horses are animals, all animals are NOT white horses.

Inverted logic and half truths are not examples of good rhetorical methodology. While the recessivist right wallows in that sh**, it is remains unacceptable.

I understand your anger and note that you are moved to express yourself. I even applaud that behavior. Unfortunately, you continuously demand responsibility in others and continually fail to be responsible for the effect of the words you type. The cliché that when one points, there are three fingers pointing back at the pointer is true. I ask you to be better than that and cease your hypocrisy. You, of course, have the right to ignore my all too reasonable request as your apparent habit suggests you will.

I know Karen Meredith's story. I know everybody's story who lost a loved one in a real life war. Bur Karen Meredith, if you do not like the game, don't buy it and SHUT THE FUCK UP. Whatever your son's name is, if his name and likeness are ever used in a game, you got a problem there. As the game stands, it deals with a FICTIONAL war with FICTIONAL characters.

Should I look at the tragic 3rd place finish, followed by murder suicide of his family of that really lousy Wheel of Fortune contestant and never buy a copy of a Wheel of Fortune video game again? Or maybe the people behind Railroad Tycoon should be blacklisted at all Best Buy and FYE locations for silently advocating mistreatment of Asians?

Marilyn Manson sells a ton of records without the support of you whiny fuckin' pansies every year. Mostly, to your own children. Ever wonder why that is?

Not to mention, the hardcore pornography industry mentioned in the title of this thread is a billion dollar a year industry too. Do America's porn consumers stop just because some girl kills herself after picking up a painful STD from a shoot just trying to become a star? I will admit the analogy is kind of extreme but I'm sure you get the message.

NYC "Mosque" - I haven't heard anyone ask what would be happening now if the Islamic Community Center existed in that same spot before 9-11. Would people be insisting that they move? I think nothing would have been said about it. I certainly don't think any gov't would have forced them to move.

@rladlof, the triad of evil nations are America, England, and Israel. Yes, Israel!!! All three nations are interested in creating chaos so the people will be fearful and it is easier to control fearful people.

Holy crap Gerald . . . Drop knee-jerk, mindlessly hyperbolic rhetoric about Israel.

Israel does not seek the genocide of the folk who label themselves “Palestinians.” In fact since the Arabic neighbors of the “Palestinians” abandoned all support of Gaza and the West Bank, the major of support for the “Palestinian” territories has come from Israel. The “Palestinian” territories remain a huge/gigantic drain upon Israel’s resources and Israel craves peace in the region so they can get on with own business.

The running issue is the sovereign nation of Israel is being forced to attempt to make peace with a marketing gimmick composed of flesh and blood humans, designed with the specific intention to destroy it. Financial backing of the “leadership” comes from folk whose rhetoric for the last 60 plus years has been the destruction of Israel. Peace is difficult to obtain when that folk cross the table shoot thousands of missiles at you civilian population every time you stand down. The “leadership” of the “Palestinians” has zero interest in peace or anything remotely looking like it.

You exhibit a marked tenancy to toss about NAZI references about nearly everything but they are offensive to folk with any relationship to that period of history and have no relationship to the topic at hand. The Christ that you go on about so often would mostly likely consider your characterization of this subject dramatically outside of Halakaic parameters . . . SO please show restraint and refrain from being . . . well . . . yourself on any posting you make regarding this topic

I took a Game Theory class last semester. Before I took the class I agreed with Thom about censorship of violence. However, I learned a couple things that changed my mind. I am posting links to two articles that illustrate a point of view not represented.

    Enfranchise Me!

I was listening to Thom's program and this idea really captivated me. I thought it was just the way things were, that a <18 person would never be allowed to vote. Hearing Thom speak in favour of it as motivated me.

I am 16 years old and live in Manitoba, Canada. Obviously, I am in favour of lowering the voting age to 16. Some raise the point that 16 years olds are disinterested in the political system and I think this could not be farther from the truth. In my group of friends, we often discuss Canadian, American and world politics. It is something that interests all of us. In fact, when I took American History in gr. 10, we were so interested in the political process that 25 of the 30 students in my class, agreed to go back to school at 19h00 to watch the coverage of the American election.

Youth bring a different view to elections. Generally, we are more optimistic. To give another example, in Grade 6, there was a national election. My teacher had each of us get into teams and represent different parties. The New Democratic Party won the election , followed by the Conservatives. Interestingly enough, lesser considered parties like the Marxist-Lennist Party and the Christian Heritage Party also received a few votes. Youths today do pay attention to the political system and with instruction in the system, this proves to be a good exercise of democracy.

In the broadcast today matters of education came up. Other policies, like military policy and minimum wage are closely watched by youth. The minimum wage in Manitoba has increased by $1 in the last year. This has been a very nice improvement. What's funny, is that people my age are most affected by this increase, but we really don't get a say in the process.

Maybe I have typed to much. But here's my summary. Youth aren't monolithic. Quite a few of us are interested in politics and democracy, if we were enfranchised, then more of those would be. A voter turnout of 56% in Canada, doesn't really present a high bar for youth participation in the electoral process. Also, one can't assume that all children a liberal. My best friend is very conservative. We were debate partners in the national competition and we spent most of our prep time fighting each other's points. Finally, children see issues differently. We are the one's most affected by military policy, minimum wage, education, tuition rates, and environmental issues.
