Disturbing candidates. I live in California and the one question that keeps coming back to me is - Why would someone spend tens of millions of their own money to get a job that only pays a couple hundred thousand a year, if that? Oh right, it's about the POWER. That to me is not just perverse, it's sick. It demonstrates a warped personality, someone whose character is not to be trusted. NOTE: I'm not against some millionaire running for public office and using campaign contributions to run. But the idea that the job of Governor or Senator is SO important to an individual that they would spend millions of their money on a campaign instead of using that money to benefit others - even if they spent it on yachts and vacations, someone would benefit from the money spent - that's just sick and disgusting and I wouldn't vote for that person if they were the only candidate on the ballot. And that applies to Democrats as much as Republicans, or Independents. To me, Meg Whitman and Carly Fiorina demonstrate sociopathic characteristics that make them unfit for public office.
re: #11, stores now computerize and analyize your purchases via cash register receipts. They'll leave little messages on the bottom of your receipt like "how's that bed-wetting problem?"
I wonder if people's willingness to talk about anything about themselves thru Facebook or Twitter, for instance, could ever be used against them in a courtroom. How can you complain about someone stealing your ID if you practically give it away, a lawyer might argue. It works for rapists. How can you claim you were raped if you've done X, Y and Z before?
Sometimes there are good reasons for keeping track of purchases. We got a phone message from Walgreens because they said their records indicated that we bought some children's Tylenol, Benedryl, or some other medicine and there's been a recall with a certain lot number, so be sure to check it.
I also did like when I got an email from LaCoste reminding me that a shirt was in my online shopping bag, and did I still want it.
When it's for convenience or to alert you with possible issues, I am all for it. You should have a right to opt out of things, though. I wonder how Walgreens knew I bought over-the-counter medicine, though.
See 'Century of the Self' to address are we consumers or are we citizens. You can google and watch on line for free. There is actual footage of Sigmund Freud and his nephew Bearnaise who used his uncle's findings to change Americans from citizens to mindless consumers.
I don't even like the free club cards different stores offer. I just reject them outright. The clerks are just amazed that I reject them, assuring me that the cards are free. "We just need your address." What amazes me is that they can say that and not even realize why I don't want the damn thing.
I can't believe what I heard on your show. Someone is advocating letting their privacy be infringed by commercialism for the sake of "convenience"? Have we become a nation of ignorance? How can people put their heads in the sand after watching our world be compromised by corporations? We have given corporations the rights of people so their power over our lives is paramount to our own. Look at the BP disaster in the Gulf. Because of greed the accident happened. Because of greed Cheney had closed door meetings with energy officials giving away all our rights to oversight on their desires for more profit. And now we are allowing corporations to have complete sway over our politics with unllimited funding of campaigns, and no accountability if the Republican corporatists continue to impede progress in Congress. How can anyone not see what is happening right in front of our eyes? There is no separation of corporate and government worlds. We are being bought and sold by Corporations with our own willingness to not see and desire for "fun" or "convenience". We need a prime directive of "Do No Harm" before convenience.
In addition to treading water financially, middle class workers have also lost the 40 hour week. If you are a "professional" a line that is always being reassessed downward, then you are paid for 40 hour, but usually work much, much more for free. Why, because if you don't there are 200 more people in line to take your decent middle class job when you fall.
I submit that we could significantly reduce unemployment by eliminating the "professional" exemption for the 40 hour week. If everyone actually only worked the hours they were paid for, I am sure we could add at least 30 - 50% workers in this country. Of course, first you would have to eliminated the H1B Visa program, or all the additional jobs would be outsourced.
No politician EVER talks about free overtime in America. It's rampant, and it hurts the family unit. It needs to end.
I am going to share with you an experience from college. For a brief time the guys sat around and talked about how many co-eds they could see in one day. This was during my senior year. I listened and I tried to see how many different co-eds I would be able to see in one day.
Here is what happened. It was on a Sunday. Co-ed one and I attended Mass. I dropped her back at the dorm. I pick up co-ed two for breakfast. I went to the library to study with co-ed three. I had lunch with co-ed four. I saw a movie with co-ed five. I had a relaxing dinner with co-ed six. And, I strolled the campus with co-ed seven.
Fortunately, it was my senior year because some co-eds heard of my venture and I was placed on the Co-ed S-list. So, I ended my college career on an infamous note.
I live in a town that openly prays before city council meetings, has military style "eye in the sky" patrolling at night, has 5 super Wal-marts with a population of 500,000, publicly backs the nAZi law and the mayor has openly said he wants to be king despite already doing as he pleases and disposing of any who get in his way while he flies in his private jet. Big brother and the future of America is here in Lancaster, CA already.

correction! Its actually I before E except after C, and on holidays and week ends, etc.
re: #12: if you do X, don't do it with Y or Z. OK sometimes after C.

In California, most of these are so-called 'Sobriety Check Points' and they're supposedly looking for drunk drivers.
Did you know that Fox got a front row seat in the White House briefing room?
“Fox's upgrade is an acknowledgment of its "length of service and commitment," the White House Correspondents Association board said in a statement.”
Seriously? Hasn't NPR been serving longer and far more fairly? Why does everyone give in to those thugs?
Unless of course you are about to commit a crime.....
FOX LOST Helen's seat though- per CREDO action of about a half a million signatures in about a day.

Even at seventy-one I have decided to return to college and renew my glory days.

no doubt, they are in the minority, but seem to hold all the cards.
the cards that give them health care, but cause rage when we attempt to get health care for all
the cards that let them control the media, while whining that the "mainstream liberal media" is in charge
the cards they use to convince the masses that trickle down economics works
etc etc it is frustrating
